Concerning the assassination attempt

Statement by the Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, J. Blanár, on the assassination attempt on the Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic, Robert Fico

Bratislava, May 15, 2024 – The Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, Juraj Blanár, informs that today the Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic, Robert Fico, was the victim of an assassination attempt shortly after the government session in the city of Handlova. The assailant targeted the Prime Minister with several close-range shots. The Prime Minister was taken to the hospital in Banská Bystrica in very serious condition. “I strongly condemn this insidious act perpetrated against the Prime Minister as an attack on democracy. In this spirit, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Slovak Republic has informed all accredited and pre-accredited embassies for the Slovak Republic, EU representatives, and Slovak embassies as well. Thank you for the expressions of solidarity and support. We all believe that the Prime Minister will overcome this difficult battle.” Minister J. Blanár stated.

I wish to thank the Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Juraj Blanár, and join his firm condemnation of the assassination attempt on our Prime Minister Robert Fico: this vile attack represents not only an assault on the person of the Prime Minister but also a serious attack on democratic principles and the stability of our country. I extend sincere thanks to all those who have expressed solidarity and support in this critical moment. Our nation is united in hope and prayer for the swift recovery of Prime Minister Fico. I appreciate the prompt response of security forces and healthcare professionals, who are doing everything possible to ensure the best care for our Prime Minister.”
